October Discount Days!

It’s that time of year again….family picture time! It’s been so fun to talk with a lot of you about your family sessions and I want to accommodate all of you. So….I’m having TWO Discount Photography Days.

When: Saturday, Oct. 16th in the morning and evening, Monday October 18th in the evening.

Oct. 16th Moring Session: warm, fall leaves will provide the perfect backdrop for your pictures and just in time for your Christmas cards.

Oct. 16th Evening Session: a beautiful, golden field will provide a warm backdrop for formal pics, but also fun candids with the kids. Fields work well with blending in with your family/living room décor and provide a neutral palette for many clothing options.

Oct. 18th Evening Session: depends on what is more popular, the field or leaves. Either will be beautiful!

Session Info:
Discount sessions are 1 hour and will include both formal/posed shots, candids and both group and individual shots.

Prices: Sessions are $250, but if you get another family to sign up, you’ll get $50 off. Or if you post a link to my blog off of Facebook, you’ll get $25 off.
Digital Negatives: You will receive all high-resolution negatives from the session (approx. 200-250 pics). Each one will be touched up to enhance its beauty.

Who: Sessions can be for families (up to 6 people,) kids, seniors, couple, individual or engagements.

Deposit: A $100 deposit must be paid by October 1st to hold your spot. I will give away your spot if payment is not received by then. The remaining balance is due by the day of shoot.

Arrival Time: Plan on arriving at least 10 minutes prior to your session. Sessions are booked back-to-back; if you arrive late, it will take away time from your allotted time. If you miss your spot, you will lose your deposit and it can’t be applied to a later session.

About Brandee: I’ve been documenting weddings with my business for four years now (check them out www.philosophyphotos.com). All along I've been shooting families, but I haven’t been marketing or displaying the pictures as weddings keep me pretty darn busy. But I can no longer pretend I don’t love the documentary aspect of recording families and I’m going to launch my family photography website late fall.

Bridal Show Fun!

Wow! I had so much fun visiting with brides, their families and a few fiances this weekend. The next stage after a bridal show is equally as fun...consultation time. My week is full, but I'm not complaining. If you've booked a consultation, I look forward to talking with you again soon and if you haven't and are interested, let's get one scheduled soon. I do a limited number of weddings a month and several months are filling up fast!

On October 24th, 2009 we will host a charity photography day for the Women for Women International Organization.

How this day will work:

Each session is 30 minutes long and the minimum donation required is $150. We would love if you could donate more to this great cause, especially since your donation will be doubled! You will receive all digital images on a disc from your session-copyright free. 100% of our profits will go to the organization. We just want to do this to try to give back a little because we have been so truly blessed in our lives.

Time slots will be limited and are on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a morning session in downtown Ogden for a more urban feel (9:30-11:30 am) and in the late afternoon/evening (3:30-5:30 pm) at Beus Pond in Ogden with fall leaves and the pond. These sessions can be for families up to 6 people, children, seniors, teens, bridals or even engagements.

A non-refundable deposit of $75 is due on October 10th to hold your time slot. The remaining donation (minimum of another $75) is required on October 24th.
Please help us by telling your family and friends about this charity day and help us raise as much money as possible to help this great organization.

Britani's Bridals

I met Britani's mom, let's see...I think in January at a bridal show. She was so cute and looked through all my albums and talked about her daughter that lived in Florida that was getting married in Utah. She was going around to all the bridal shows to help her plan her wedding since she was so far away. As she talked about her daughter you could tell how proud she was of her. Britani went to law school in Florida, practices there now, but will be moving back to Utah to practice here. Anyway, I was very excited when her mom called to book me.

Britani wanted a very classic look to her pictures and she relaxed very quickly behind the camera. Her pictures...wow! She's just stunning! We did end the session on a bad note though...we were waiting for her dad to pull the car around and we stopped under a tree. BAD IDEA!! I think you know where I'm heading with this, right? Yep, a lovely bird relieved himself all over Britani. Luckily only one small drop hit her dress, the rest was....well, everywhere else.

If you follow my blog, these two faces should look familiar, only a bit older. I usually shoot pics of Carson and Davis once or twice a year and it was time again this year! We decided to do more of an urban shoot and let the kids play on some trains and just be boys. They had a lot of fun, except for the "mean train" that gives splinters : (

These pics will go in what their mom calls, her scrapbooking efforts. She has me design an 8x8 story book album of the shoot and over the years she'll have a collection of books that show her boys through out the years. I'll post the book when it's finished, but there are examples of her past books through out my blog.

Also, Jennifer sent me this nice note and I thought I'd share...

"LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these pictures!! Thank you so much. I realize chasing the same two boys around can get boring, but you do such an amazing job and always capture Carson and Davis perfectly. Even the duplicates and not so perfect pictures truly reflect them at this stage. I know you do mostly wedding stuff, but as long as you are willing to keep shooting the candid shots of the boys, we'll keep doing it!

Thanks again. I'm going to get a box of tissues and look through the pictures again.... I wish they would stop growing! :-)"

Fremont Drill Team Shoot

Wow! What an incredible shoot this was. I really had such a fun time taking pictures for the Fremont Drill Team. Whitney, one of my brides from last year asked me if I would be interested in shooting pics of her team. She was looking for some non-traditional and on location shooting and wanted both an urban and nature feel to the shoot. The ones below are from the urban part of the shoot and the nature ones as well as team ones will follow...

Baby Mateo

Welcome baby Mateo! He's now two months old, but I thought I'd post his birth announcement. Shooting newborns is definitely different than shooting a bride, especially if the newborn does not have his diaper on ; ) Many, many, many accidents.

Is he not the cutest baby? We had the announcements printed on soft, linen paper from one of my vendors. They're actually two-sided so the other side becomes a 5x7 print that grandma can frame.

Hello SLCC Students

Yesterday I was invited back to Salt Lake Community Colleges' photography program (where I took classes) to talk to the students who are just about ready to graduate and venture out on their own paths.

I was a tad nervous, having two of my old teachers listen to me give advice to their students, but I was so thankful for the opportunity. Thanks for being so nice. I hope I was able to answer some of your questions and if you think of any others, let me know. Overall, don't let you be the reason your photography dreams don't happen. Believe in your talent, work hard, be smart and it will happen!

For the photographers out there that email me about my training or if I offer any classes, I highly recommend SLCC. There are two teachers in particular that I think are amazing! Terry Martin and Ed Rosenberger. I don't think Terry has a website, but here's Ed's work www.edrosenberger.com. It speaks for itself. If you want to pursue photography, any type, don't overlook these well respected, creative and knowledgeable teachers at SLCC!

New Brochure & Business Cards....

I can now post my new brochure and business cards! I spent the day designing them, well mostly the brochure, and my sister gave me the final ok. When I design, I like to run the final products past her. She makes sure I'm not the only one who thinks they look pretty : ) Thanks Lindsee! Here they are...

Out for a bit...

Hi there everyone, I've communicated this to the clients I'm working with right now, but I will be out for the next week and a half. Duty calls in Hawaii! You see, Nick and Mindy are tying the knot in Kona and I'm so fortunate to go with them and record their wedding...they really had to twist my arm though. I'll be checking emails and taking phone calls occasionally, probably more than I should, but if there's a slight delay in me getting back to you this is why.

Here are some pics from Nick and Mindy's engagement session. We got a little bit of everything! My favorites are of the Salt Flats. So serene and beautiful there. The sky and salt flats absorbed the lighting the sun was giving off and they changed colors every few minutes.

When I met with Meg and Wes to talk about what they had in mind for their engagements they said "Ansel Adams". You see they both enjoy nature, everything about it and if they were to take their pictures anywhere else, it wouldn't portray their personalities correctly. So they got me out into the mountains for their engagements and I'm so glad they did!!

I'm working on Natalie and Chris' wedding right now and I came across this one. There are some shots you have to wait for to get. This is one of them. Natalie and Chris had just come out of the Salt Lake Temple and they were enjoying a moment together as everyone was congratulating them. I noticed the flower girl behind them admiring the couple and holding up Natalie's dress, so I patiently waited for the second where the flower girl's expression was perfect and not being blocked by Natalie and Chris. Sometimes you have to wait for those moments very patiently, but they're worth it! Congrats Natalie and Chris!

We started out shooting just Whitney, the best dance teacher in the whole world (just ask her girls)! And then we met up with her dance team, well both groups. Whitney is not only a high school dance teacher, but she also teaches dance to girls 3-teens. How fun showing up to a shoot with about 30 girls and parents!!

Well, Nicole and Chet...you fulfilled my dreams (way to reach for the stars, right?) They were dancing to a very slow and touching "The Broken Road", I felt a tear coming on...then all the sudden...."I like big...and I can not lie....!" Then the real tears almost came for me. I'd waited so long for this moment and it was happening right before my very eyes. I think I even got goose bumps! I focused my emotion and snapped like crazy. Ahhhhhh....what a beautiful moment. As you all know, I'm very behind with posting. Tis the season for shooting weddings and wedding albums. They are keeping me crazy busy but filling my summer with fun! Yesterday I had an engagement shoot with Darla & Will. Oh what a night! We all got very dirty, but minus that and me stepping on a branch that pegged Darla in the head and being eaten by a few bugs, all was well...

Oh, I felt so bad...I was getting Darla ready for the next shot--we were if this field of weeds, sticks, rocks and the beautiful, old Chevy truck. I was fixing her hair and getting her situated. Everything was ready but me, so I took a step back to take the picture and bam!! I stepped on this long, firm branch that went straight for Darla's head. It all happened so fast and she didn't have time to move. She started laughing so hard, so I started laughing--but I felt bad. Luckily, she didn't get hurt. It was more starling than anything and the timing was ironic.

Anyway, Darla and Will scored themselves a $50 gift certificate to this home decorating store. We were in need of some people to help us out for the city shot below and the landlord of the store agreed to help us, by walking through the shot and getting others to as well. Well, he wanted to wish them well so he talked the store into giving them a gift certificate. There are so many GOOD people in this world!

Alright, enough of my ramblings...here are a few of their pictures. I hope you enjoy them Darla and Will, the rest will be ready very soon!!

Darla and Will wanted to visit the old Chevy truck. They were daring and ventured inside. Needless to say, their jeans were a little dirty, but these will make for beautiful pictures for their guest sign-in book.

I absolutely loved this shoot! Originally we were going to shoot in Ogden, but I came across this beat up truck and gas station on my drive home the other day. Traffic can be a bugger sometimes, so I took a different route home. When I saw the two locations, I knew I had to shoot there and I thought Katy would be perfect for the locations. I talked to her about it and she was game. She was so trusting and open to ideas. I feel like I get some of my best shots out of a couple when they're open to new locations and ideas.

During the shoot I noticed right away how passionate about each other they were. I think the pictures recorded this and just how in love they are...

My first shot of the day, was one where they weren't posed, they were just being themselves while I shot from behind a tree. Sometimes I feel a little stalkerish! He, he! But including some of the environment in a picture can create a beautiful scene and mood.

I can't wait for Katy's bridals and wedding!

Erin's shoot was so much fun, especially at the graffiti wall. There's something about this type of wall that brings out the "model" side in a bride. Erin was so natural at posing in front of it! Anyone need a Scholarship?

I've been volunteering with a local organization called YouthLINC for years, eight to be exact. YouthLINC started a scholarship program to reward young humanitarians in Utah who are involved with local or international service. A lot of my brides are students, so I thought I'd pass this link on. There are billboards up for it, so you may have seen it around town. Anyway, if you're heavily involved with service, learn more about how to apply for the Young Humanitarian Award for 2008-2009.

My YouthLINC experience is actually what inspired me to pursue photography. I traveled to Kenya back in 2000 on a humanitarian expedition. What a life changing experience that was for me. My eyes were on sensory overload as I viewed my surroundings in Nairobi on the way to the remote village we were serving at. Never had I seen such poverty...toddlers running around in sewage, garbage everywhere -- but there were smiles.

In the village we now called home, I couldn't help but just observe and take in how they lived each day. There was hard work, and the soles of their feet, wrinkled skin and calloused hands, proved this. But their spirits weren't calloused and showed no signs of the wear and tear their bodies did. I couldn't help but pull out my new SLR camera and capture their untold stories. From Kenya on, service and photography, well capturing human nature with my camera, were major aspects of my life.

When I returned home from Kenya, I cried. I wanted to go back. I needed to go back. It's hard to explain.

My friend and I saved up for a year, working two jobs to return. And we did it. We returned to help the Cultural Ambassador of the Maasai people with an environmental project. What an adventure that was.... I could go on and on about it, but I'll summarize by saying it felt like home, to be back with the amazing people of Kenya. It seemed like whatever village we went to, we were welcomed with open arms, oh and bananas (inside story here...). Every person I met had an unwritten story to tell, that I could usually figure out just by spending a few minutes with them.

The people of Kenya and the scenery brought me so much peace. I miss what I called my peaceful "Thinking Rock". I used to sit on this large rock that overlooked the Maasai Mara and one of the Maasai villages I lived by. I'd sit there when I wanted to think about the people I had come across that day or just to, well think about life. I was so inspired on this rock as I would look out at my surroundings, especially when I would observe the Maasia women. What spirits they have, especially when they have so little and are worked so hard. Many pictures were created, from this rock. Oh, how I miss Kenya....

From Kenya I traveled to Ghana and then to Peru to record their stories as well. Then I started to record stories of people in my own backyard. After I attended a bridal show several years ago, I became hooked on weddings. What a beautiful time in a couples' life...there are so many gestures, smiles, laughs, and tears to record to that tell their love story. How can you not love that?

Thanks again brides, for entrusting me to tell your story. I feel so blessed! (I know I say this a lot, but it's true…)

Hello Bridal Show Visitors...

The calls and emails are coming in.... I've been learning more about your individual weddings and ideas you have for your bridals and engagements. Candids seem to be the common theme as I talk with you about your wedding day. Luckily, candids and documentary type pictures come standard with my photography.

Utah Bridal Showcase at the Salt Palace

I had so much fun getting to know so many Utah brides, their moms, family and of course, future husbands.
There were many highlights in the show, but one I have to mention, that really touched me was when I was talking to a mom and her daughter. We were looking through one of my albums and when we got to a particular image in the album, I noticed the mom was starting to get teary eyed. The picture in the album was of a mom hugging her daughter before she got married. Her expression was so full of emotion...... The mom at the bridal show knew this would soon be her and couldn't hold back her tears.

This is why I do this....to capture those special moments for you. Thank you everyone for stopping by and sharing a little bit about you and your upcoming weddings with me.
